Guess, then measure
Most people's guess overstates focused work and understates messages. Do the guess now, then keep a log for a week and enter the real figures. The work templates include a daily work log you can use for the week.
Getting real numbers without logging by hand
Hand logs fall apart on busy days, which are the days you most want to see. Dayflow is a free, open-source Mac app that records your screen and turns it into a timeline, so the week is already written down when you sit down to audit it. See where did my day go. Dayflow publishes this tool.
Frequently asked questions
What does this calculator do?
You enter rough weekly hours for a handful of categories and it shows each as a share of your work week, plus how much is left for focused work.
What if I do not know my hours?
Guess first. Then log one normal week and enter the real numbers. The difference between the guess and the log is usually the most useful part.
What is a good split?
There is no universal one. It depends on your job. The useful question is whether the split matches what you think your job is.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent.
